The goal of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to support students who have achieved highly in their undergraduate and early graduate studies while also assisting in the development of research skills and the training of highly qualified personnel.
Scholarship Overview
High-caliber scholars enrolled in eligible master’s or, in some situations, doctoral programs in Canada are given financial support under the CGS M program (refer to Eligibility for more information). These scholars are able to entirely focus on their studies in their chosen subjects because of this assistance.
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council together run the CGS M program, which provides funding for up to 3,000 students annually across all disciplines (SSHRC). Under the direction of the three agencies, the institutional level manages the selection procedure and post-award administration. Students use the Research Portal to submit their applications to the organization where they want to hold their awards.

o between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be satisfied before the end of the award, or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be satisfied before the end of the award.
• be exempt from receiving CGS M scholarships from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
• have earned a first-class average** in each of the last two completed academic years, as judged by the host school (full-time equivalent)
Note: Institutions may accept CGS M applications from those who have not earned a first-class average at their discretion; get in touch with your potential host institutions to find out how they treat this eligibility condition.
• submit no more than one scholarship (master’s or doctoral) or fellowship application to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC per academic year o Note: If more than one application is made, the eligible applicants that were submitted first chronologically will be kept o Note: Nominations to the Vanier CGS program and applications to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program do not count toward this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships)
For information on part-time admittance, consult the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide.
Regardless of whether they were finished at the institution awarding the degree, all coursework credited toward the qualifying program will be considered.
Study Program Eligibility
In order to be considered for funding, a graduate program must have a substantial research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, academic publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.
Joint professional degree programs (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) and clinically oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, are acceptable if they incorporate a large autonomous research component, as mentioned above.
Since they lack the considerable research component mentioned above, master’s programs that are solely based on coursework are often ineligible.
Institutions are encouraged to get advice on program eligibility from the relevant authorities given the unique criteria of some subjects.
Places That Qualify As Tenure
All CGS M awards are only valid in Canadian institutions that qualify.
