Students who are enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program or who have just graduated and are interested in enrolling in the OIST PhD program may participate in educational activities at OIST as research interns. Students can gain experience conducting research under the supervision of OIST academics by participating in a research internship at the institute.
Positions for research interns are given out twice a year on a competitive basis. The desired research’s suitability, academic background, available funding, and space are all taken into consideration throughout the very competitive selection process. Not every open position will inevitably be filled.
OIST works to establish and uphold a diverse, inclusive workplace that doesn’t discriminate on the basis of gender, gender identity, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, physical or mental illness, marital status, race, ethnicity, ancestry, culture, national origin, or religion. We strongly welcome applications from women and other underrepresented groups.
Application Method
1. The online form must be used to submit applications to the program.
2. After at least one reference letter has been received in the application system, you can only submit your application.
3. You’ll get a notification automatically when your application is accepted. (Please verify that you can receive emails from the @oist.jp domain by checking your settings.)
4. Applications will be reviewed and a final decision made after the application period.
5. Three months following the application deadline, the announcement of the results will be released on your application platform. A notification will be sent to you when the outcome is posted. (Occasionally, applicants’ email services or settings make it impossible for them to receive our notifications. Please verify that emails from the @oist.jp domain can be received in your inbox.)
6. All relevant arrangements will be made in collaboration with the interns after the final confirmation of internship offers. For the logistics to start the internship on schedule, including possible visa preparations and other relevant Japanese government paperwork, your cooperation is required.
Eligibility
Excellent students who are enrolled in their final two years of their undergraduate or master’s degree programs at universities, colleges, junior colleges, or vocational schools in Japan or abroad—or who have already graduated from such institutions—are eligible to apply for the OIST Research Internship Program. Students who are currently enrolled require permission from their home university. The applicants’ academic backgrounds should be appropriate for the OIST host unit(s) they choose.
When accepted into the OIST Research Internship program, research interns who are affiliated with a Japanese university or institution are needed to prepare and provide their own insurance. The combination of Gakkensai and Gakkenbai, as well as other insurances with comparable coverage, are acceptable insurances.
