WHAT IS A PET?
An animal kept mainly for a person’s company or amusement as opposed to use as a working animal, farm animal, or laboratory animal is known as a pet or companion animal. Popular pets are frequently seen to be intelligent, well-mannered, and likable, yet other animals may be adopted out of kindness (such as a stray animal) and welcomed by the owner irrespective of these qualities.
Dogs and cats are two of the most widely owned pets. Other animals that are frequently kept as pets include rabbits, ferrets, pigs, rodents like gerbils, hamsters, hedgehogs, rats, mice, and guinea pigs, as well as digital pets like Tamagotchis, birds like parrots and passerines, reptiles like turtles, alligators, crocodiles, and snakes, aquatic animals like fish, freshwater snails, and saltwater snail The highest companion animals belong to the equine and bovine group, while small pets can be categorized as “pocket pets.”
Pets benefit their owners (or “guardians”) physically and psychologically. Both the beings and the dog can benefit from the exercise, fresh air, and interaction that come with dog walking. Pets can provide companionship for people who are alone or for elderly people who don’t get enough social interaction. There is a category of therapy animals that are brought to visit constrained humans, such as kids in hospitals or elderly people in nursing homes, and they are typically dogs or cats. Pet therapy makes use of professionally trained animals and their handlers to help patients meet specific physical, social, intellectual, or emotional goals.
The top three reasons people get dogs are companionship, house or property protection, and the animals’ alleged good looks or attractiveness.
According to a research conducted in Canada in 1994, the inability to care for a pet when traveling, a lack of time, and a lack of adequate housing were the top three reasons people did not own pets. Disliking animals was less prevalent (19.6 percent ). Because non-human animals lack autonomy and are objectified, some academics, ethicists, and animal rights activists have expressed concern about having pets.
