SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS
THE TY COBB FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATION
Tyrus R. Cobb, who passed away in 2014, founded the Foundation to help qualified and worthy Georgians who require financial support to finish their college degrees.
Foundation scholarships are given to deserving students with the goal of supporting their full-time enrollment at an approved institution or university. A regional accrediting agency approved by the Council for Postsecondary Education must accredit the college or university.
Although former winners and others are urged to make donations to the Ty Cobb Educational Foundation when conditions permit, all scholarships are awarded without any further obligation on the part of the student to the Foundation.
Despite earning less than $40,000 as a baseball player, Ty Cobb became financially successful at a young age thanks to his astute investments.
He made numerous investments, one of which was the acquisition of stock in Coca-Cola, a little-known Southern beer company, which helped to pave the way for his early success. Cobb finally had enough money to start a scholarship that has helped thousands of Georgians attend college to this day.
ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP
Georgia residents who meet the requirements and who are citizens of the United States are given foundation scholarships in order to enroll full-time at an authorized institution or university. A regional accrediting agency approved by the Council for Postsecondary Education must accredit the college or university.
The majority of scholarships are awarded for one school year and may be extended for one or more years.
AWARDS OF SCHOLARSHIPS INCLUDE
- Undergraduates who have completed their first year
- To professionals pursuing their education
- Degrees in MD/DO or DMD/DDS
Although former winners and others are urged to make donations to the Ty Cobb Education Association when the situation allows, all scholarships are awarded without any further obligation on the part of the student to the Foundation.
A student may be offered a scholarship to attend an approved college or university in Georgia or another state, even though scholarships are only given to students who are qualified Georgia residents and U.S. citizens. Typically, scholarships are given out for one academic year.
Scholarships are granted with the intent that the recipient would attend a certain college, and they cannot be transferred to another institution without the scholarship board’s prior approval.
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for a Ty Cobb scholarship, a student must be a Georgia resident, a citizen of the United States, have shown the financial need, and have finished at least 30 semesters or 45 quarter hours of coursework at a recognized college or institution with a grade point average of “B” or above (must be a high school graduate). A regional accrediting agency adopted by the Council for Postsecondary Education must accredit the college or university.
Priority will be given to students who have the greatest financial need and highest academic standing.
Ty Cobb scholarships are available to professional students who want to pursue their MD/DO or DMD/DDS degrees who are Georgia residents, United States citizens, and have a documented need for financial assistance.
