SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR
EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL
A four-year public high school with a 65-acre (260,000 m2) campus, Evanston Township High School (ETHS) Area 202 is located in Evanston, Illinois, a northern suburb along the Lake Michigan shore. With a total district population of about 78,000, ETHS was founded in 1883 and currently serves the city of Evanston and a small fraction of the nearby hamlet of Skokie.
Northwestern University calls the school’s attendance area home. 589 certified employees work at Evanston Township High School. The State of Illinois has granted ETHS full accreditation.
The Preparatory School of Northwestern University, which opened its doors in 1857, was Evanston’s first high school. In an upper level of the Benson Avenue School, Evanston’s first public high school class was first taught in 1873 by the city’s superintendent of schools, Otis E. Haven. The first Education board in Evanston decided to create a “high school” in the space in 1875, and the first graduating class of two pupils did so in 1876. The school’s enrollment increased quickly, and despite numerous moves to different facilities, by 1882 it had won four awards in a statewide contest and was voted third best in Illinois. Voters approved a vote and bond issue to create a township school shortly after that, in April 1882. The first structure was completed on schedule in October 1882 and opened at Dempster and Elmwood in 1883.
Despite numerous expansions to the original structure, enrollment increased quickly, and by 1913, 740 students were housed in a building designed to hold only 600. As many efforts to pass bond measures for additional construction were rejected at the polls, the crowding grew. The Board decided to build a new school in a new location in 1915, but construction was delayed for years by a contentious battle over the campus’s location, which included legal battles that reached the Illinois Supreme Court. Finally, a 55-acre (220,000 m2) site at the school’s present campus, 1600 Dodge Avenue in the heart of Evanston, was approved by the Board and the public in 1921. Even though it was still under construction when it opened in 1924, construction started in 1923.
