SCHOLARSHIP PIONEERS
A pioneer in broadcasting and a journalist, Walter J. Brown founded and served as chairman of Spartan Communications, Inc., one of the biggest privately held TV firms in the nation.
When he worked as a member of James F. Byrnes’ staff and had an office at the White House early in his profession, Brown. Only Brown’s admiration for Jimmy Byrnes could rival his unwavering passion for politics. Brown formed his own charitable Organization in 1970, partly as a result of Byrnes’ philanthropy, which had helped to found the James F. Byrnes Foundation in 1948. The Watson-Brown Foundation, which is named after J.J. Brown’s mentors Thomas E. Watson and Thomas E. Watson, continues to make sure that thousands of deserving students have the chance to succeed at the school of their choice.
He was born in 1903 in Bowman, Georgia, the youngest of J. J. Brown’s four boys. He received his education at Georgia Tech as well as the University of Georgia’s Henry W. Grady School of Journalism. In Washington, D.C., Walter Brown started his media career before eventually running his own news agency. In order to work as the vice president and general manager of the Spartanburg Advertising Company and then as the owner of the Spartanburg radio station WSPA, he relocated to Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1940. As Director of War Mobilization and then Secretary of State James F. Byrnes’ special assistant after World War II, Walter Brown relocated back to Washington. He was a representative of the United States at both the Potsdam Conference and the inaugural meeting of foreign ministers in London. Brown went back to Spartanburg after the war to carry on his illustrious broadcasting career. In 1947, he founded the Spartan Radiocasting Company and held the positions of president, chairman, and CEO. J. J. Brown and Thomas E. Watson — Georgia Politics 1912–1928 and James F. Byrnes of South Carolina — A Remembrance are two works written by Walter Brown.
WATSON, THOMAS E
Two miles off Thomson, Georgia, on September 5, 1856, Thomas E. Watson was born. Following his graduation from Mercer and completion of his legal studies, Watson returned to Thomson in 1877 to launch a prosperous legal career. In 1882, he participated in the Georgia House of Representatives. From 1890 to 1892, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives. From 1920 until his passing in 1922, he served in the U.S. Senate. Soon after being elected to Congress, Watson rose to become their leader. In 1896, he and William Jennings Bryan of the Populist Party ran for vice president. In 1904 and 1908, he ran for President using the same platform. Watson dominated Georgia’s political environment for more than 25 years, while only serving in elected office for five of his 66 years. Watson was a prolific writer in addition to becoming a statesman and Georgia’s top trial lawyer in his day. In addition to countless other books, pamphlets, and published speeches, he wrote a two-volume history of France, histories of Napoleon, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson, and many other works. For more than ten years, Watson authored and edited his monthly Watson’s Magazine as well as his weekly paper, The Jeffersonian.

College education, in the opinion of our founder Walter J. Brown, is the surest path to success and fulfillment. To prove this theory, he founded a private Foundation in 1970. Students from towns in and around the Savannah River valley, where Brown was born and spent the majority of his adult life, are eligible for scholarships from the Watson-Brown Foundation.
