SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR
NATIONAL PRESS CLUB
Scholarships in the field of journalism are available from the Press Club of America in Washington, DC, to qualified applicants.
In Washington, D.C., journalists and communications specialists can network and socialize at the National Press Club. It hosts both public and private events where invited public figures talk. The club also makes event space available to outside organizations for the hosting of social gatherings, business meetings, and news conferences.
32 newspapermen gathered on March 12, 1908, at the Washington Commerce Chamber to explore founding a club for journalists. The group gathered again to draft a charter for the National Press Club on March 29 in the Willard Hotel’s F Street parlor. In their creed, the Club’s founders vowed to “promote social enjoyment among the members, cultivate literary taste, encourage friendly conversation among newspapermen and those they came into contact with in the course of their profession, assist members in need, and foster the moral standards of the profession.”
The original club personnel was transferred into its initial home on the second floor of 1205 F Street NW using $300. The club outgrew its new location by 1909 and relocated above Rhodes Tavern at the intersection of 15th and F Streets. Again outgrowing its home, the club relocated to the Albee Building (formerly the Riggs) at 15th and G Streets.
The National Press Club is where Washington’s newsmakers and journalists congregate. It is located atop the National Media Building, overlooking the White House and just a short walk from the U.S. Capitol. A who’s who of the 20th and 21st centuries, eager to share their opinions on current news with the public and the media, has passed through its doors, including presidents, premiers, kings, queens, Cabinet officials, senators, and members of Congress.
