The Henry David Thoreau Foundation seeks for and assists excellent young Massachusetts leaders who are dedicated to preserving future generations’ access to a healthy environment. Henry David Thoreau Scholars is what we call them.
SCHOLARSHIP SPONSOR
HENRY DAVID THOREAU FOUNDATION
Action-instigating factors include the Henry David Thoreau Foundation. By offering grants and scholarships to motivate, sustain, and encourage the efforts of young environmental leaders, we make an investment in the future of our world.
The Thoreau Foundation has contributed more than $7 million to environmental efforts since 1999. We provide scholarships every year to deserving Massachusetts seniors in high school who will go on to become the next generation of environmental leaders and pursue integrative environmental studies in higher education. Additionally, we support innovative initiatives at American schools and universities, forming partnerships with academics, expanding our network of environmental organizations, and increasing our influence.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
We choose eight to ten outstanding Massachusetts high school seniors each year who have the ability to lead in the environmental movement and who want to major in multidisciplinary environmental science in college. These scholars are known as Henry David Thoreau Scholars. Each Henry David Thoreau Scholar is awarded a maximum $20,000 scholarship for four years. In addition, environmental internship stipends are available to Thoreau Scholars and typically take place during junior and senior years.
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY SUPPORT
Students are encouraged to pursue academic and professional possibilities that appeal to their passions because we recognize that environmental challenges overlap with a wide range of disciplines, including oceanography, bioterrorism, and the design of transport networks. Students take at least 25% of their courses in environmental studies, which serve as the foundation for their study. The linkages they make with other fields—such as business, finance, education, public health, and policy—lead to an interdisciplinary knowledge of the environmental problems society is currently experiencing. The majority of Thoreau Scholars complete one or more internships, which aid them in better understanding and addressing environmental issues from a number of perspectives, including economic, historical, and sociopolitical ones.
HDT NETWORK
Thoreau Academics have access to a vibrant network of past and present scholars who work and study all over the world, providing a wealth of opportunities for both professional development and personal improvement. The Henry David Thoreau Society for the Environment welcomes new members and celebrates the accomplishments of our scholars at the Thoreau Foundation’s annual reception (our alumni association). Throughout the year, scholars and alumni also organize unofficial mentorship opportunities. Thoreau Scholars encourage, test, and encourage one another in their leadership of the environment through the HDT Network.
NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY
In administering its scholarship programs and other Foundation-managed programs and activities, the Henry David Thoreau Foundation does not discriminate against people based on their race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, handicap, age, or national or ethnic origin. The Henry David Thoreau Scholarship Fund’s Board of Trustees maintains the right to modify or alter any rules regulating the scheme.
