The United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship is a program that provides training and capacity-building opportunities to professionals working in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea. The fellowship aims to enhance the capacity of developing countries to effectively participate in the work of the United Nations in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea. It provides fellows with the opportunity to study and research at the United Nations headquarters in New York, as well as at the Nippon Foundation’s Ocean Policy Research Institute in Yokohama, Japan.
The fellowship covers the costs of tuition, travel, accommodation, and other expenses related to the fellowship program. It is open to professionals from developing countries with a background in ocean affairs, law, or related fields, and working in government, academia, or other relevant organizations.
The fellowship program includes a series of seminars, workshops, and other capacity-building activities, as well as research and study opportunities. It is designed to provide fellows with a comprehensive understanding of the United Nations system and the legal and policy frameworks related to the law of sea and ocean affairs.
Upon completion of the fellowship program, fellows are expected to return to their home countries and use the knowledge and skills they have acquired to contribute to the development and implementation of policies and programs related to ocean affairs and the law of the sea
Eligibility
To be eligible for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a national of a developing country or territory, as designated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
- You must have at least five years of professional experience in the field of disability and accessibility, either in government, civil society, academia, or the private sector.
- You must have a strong commitment to the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities and the implementation of the CRPD.
- You must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field such as disability studies, social work, education, or public policy.
- You must be proficient in English, as the fellowship program is conducted in English.
- You must be available to participate in the entire fellowship program, which includes a three-week training course at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and a three-month internship at a United Nations agency or a non-governmental organization.
