Currently THE WILSTERMAN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2023 is ongoing. They have a maximum annual award of $5,000 and are renewable for up to four years.
Students who have completed their high school education may apply for Wilsterman Scholarships in Genesee County, Michigan.
Applications may be filed at any time during the six years that follow the year of high school graduation.
Contrary to traditional scholarships, GPA is not a deciding factor.
First and foremost, the Wilsterman Foundation is looking for individuals who have outstanding potential but may have had difficulty in high school due to mitigating factors like work, family concerns, setbacks, or even “late flowering.”
The student’s character, financial necessity, and potential are all taken into consideration along with extracurricular and community service activities.
SCHOLARSHIP SPONSORS
THE WILSTERMANS
In Saginaw County, Michigan, John F “Jack” Wilsterman and Edith L. Wilsterman were born and raised.
Shortly after getting married in 1940, they discovered that they would be separated for a while as Jack defended his nation in World War II.
Working in a factory that produced military gear at home, Edith also contributed to the war effort.
After serving in the military and returning home from the war, Jack and Edith made the decision to relocate to the West side of Michigan, where Jack started working at Sears Roebuck & Company.
Jack took up the responsibilities in the projectionist’s booth, while Edith served handcrafted popcorn topped with freshly churned butter, and finally, Jack and Edith found themselves the proprietors of a theater in Cedar Springs, Michigan.
A new chance awaited after several years of success in the theater industry.
In the late 1950s, Jack was traveling for work through East Lansing when he came across a new kind of eatery that was just opened and looked to sell takeout to just onlookers.
Jack was originally opposed to the concept, but after returning to the same location days later, he was astounded by the number of people it was attracting.
This would prove to be no average eatery, but rather one of the first sites of McDonald’s, which would go on to become the country’s largest restaurant franchise.
